10km every day in April

12 May 2021

Our Men’s 1st XI captain, Jeremy Greer has had a very busy April. He's been running 300km, that’s 10k every day!  Jeremy has been doing it all for a really good cause, MacMillan Cancer Support, in memory of his nanny.

We caught up with Jeremy after he had completed his remarkable challenge and he told us how he started doing the run, “My nanny, Adelene Martin, passed away last October. MacMillan Cancer Support helped her a great deal during the last period of her illness. With everything being in lockdown, I had been thinking about how I could give something back for all their help. In March I had started to think about a running challenge and decided to run 10km every day in April.”

When we asked Jeremy how he prepared for the challenge he said, “I didn’t really give much thought to how I would get through it, just that I wanted to do it. So, I suppose you could say I was totally naive going into it.”

During the run he experienced the trials of all long-distance runners and learned how to cope with them. “I thought I would be tired and maybe the lungs would struggle on some of the runs, but I didn’t anticipate the pains in the muscles and joints that I would get! It took me a while and a visit to the physio to help with calf strains, for me to figure out I could not keep doing all these runs as fast as possible. I needed to slow down. When this was figured out, everything got more comfortable and manageable.”

On the money he raised in memory of his nanny, Jeremy told us “I had originally set a target of £1,500. To my amazement, that amount was hit in the first week. After this the plan was to just push and try and get as much in as possible, in memory of Nanny.”

He continued, “To try and do this, I decided I would go all out to make my last run my quickest and try to get a PB (personal best). I called on a lot of friends to run with me throughout the 30 runs which helped a great deal. My cousin Stefan Martin came out on the last run and pushed me every step of the way so I could get my PB and finish with a time of 41min exactly for the 10k. When we closed the fund-raising page we had raised an incredible £5,015 for this great cause and for Nanny!”
