Junior hockey is played right across Ulster. It offers children between the ages of 5 and 15 the chance to learn the sport, develop their skills, technical and tactical understanding, play competitively and have fun.
As well as learning the sport itself, playing hockey is a great way to teach children skills for life, including teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership.
The aim of mini hockey is to attract boys and girls into hockey and foster a lifelong love of the sport through a games based approach based on skill development. Some players may make our provincial and national squads and compete on the world stage, while others may participate in the sport for the rest of their life. Mini – hockey provides progressive stages for children new to hockey and lets them play a modified game at a level commensurate with their ability with the correct equipment in the appropriate game format.
It is easy to get involved, the club will lend junior players a hockey stick if they don’t have one of their own. For children aged 13 and under, Ulster Hockey have incorporated Fun 4s, Super 6s and Extreme 8s to help our young players learn the game better at each age group. Once ‘graduated’ from Extreme 8s our young players will move onto the 11 a side format with U15s before moving onto senior hockey.
Fun 4s is an exciting version of the game that introduces the sport to our youngest players. Games are played between two teams of 4 on 1/8 of the size of a full size hockey pitch. Teams can be mixed as there isn’t a big difference of ability between girls and boys at this age group . The whole aim is to introduce hockey to our youngest players and thus rules go out the window and fun is the order of the day.
Super 6s is the next step in the ladder and the progression from Fun 4s. Super 6s is played on 1/3 of a full sized hockey pitch with teams having 6 players on the pitch at any one time. This format encourages plenty of touches of the ball while developing core areas of the game such as ball and stick control, core skills, passing, receiving and tackling in a bigger pitch size.
Extreme 8s is the final progression before 11 a side hockey. Extreme 8s is played on half of a full sized hockey pitch between two teams of 8. This final stepping stone allows young players to think more about spatial awareness on the pitch and about playing a more expansive game. This also encourages the use of different advanced skills and techniques such as 3D skills and aerial passes.
Girls and Boys take part in leagues and cup competitions that run from September to April with cross over finals days for leagues and cups to celebrate the end of the season and those players that are moving up to senior hockey.
Our U15 Girls play in Ulster Hockey Development League 2. This league is designed for younger U15 sides and players that are developing their hockey ability. Leagues are regionalised and conclude with cross over finals. Teams play each other just once in group matches between September and March.
