Newry Olympic U15s 1-1 Armagh U15s

4 March 2022

Ulster Hockey U15 Girls Development League

The Olympic Under 15 girls played their second match in the Ulster Hockey Development League at home against Armagh.

Playing under the floodlights on the Belfast Road ground, the girls came away with a hard earned 1-1 draw.

The first quarter was evenly contested with both sides taking a cautious approach and having an equal share of possession.

The Newry girls stepped up a gear in the second quarter and dominated play. They won three corners in a short space of time and it was from the third that Rose Clarke struck a well placed shot to open the scoring.

In the third quarter it was Armagh's turn to place the home side under pressure. They had five corners which were all heroically defended by the Newry back line. Goalkeeper Abby Moffett made some great saves to keep a clean sheet. Caragh McGaffin was also having a super game. Playing centre-back for the first time, she gave the forwards no space. Unfortunately, the home side couldn't hold out and Armagh managed to find an equaliser.

The fourth quarter was another tense affair with both teams trying to score the winner, without leaving themselves open at the back. No further goals were added however and the match remained 1-1, which was a fair result for both sides.

Good luck to Armagh for their upcoming games and a big thank-you to all the players and the supporters for coming out to cheer on the teams on what was a bitterly cold night.
