Girls kick off new season with a great win against South Antrim

The club's U15 girls opened the new season in style with a great win against South Antrim at the Lisnagarvey grounds in Lisburn.

Newry started the match brightly, Brianna Gregg and Rachael Harshaw working well to create a shooting chance early on. Clara Doran, making her debut at right back, slotted in seamlessly and grew stronger as the game went on. Abby Moffett in goals had little to do, but held her concentration when called upon. Olivia Allely, Leah Malcomson and Lilly Mae Cully managed the game superbly, shutting out South Antrim time after time, only conceding one penalty corner all game. Shruti Suresh, Brianna and Rachel cut out various restarts to help create numerous chances for the team.

Newry had a goal disallowed in the 2nd quarter and narrowly missed out on an opener when the whistle went on the stroke of half time.

Erin Savage, starting her first ever hockey match, worked tirelessly up front with Erin Lowey and Anna Cully to keep South Antrim defence on their toes. Annalee Gregg also made her debut, coming on in the 3rd quarter up front and didn’t look out of place despite it being her first game.

The opener for the Olympic girls came from a rebound on a penalty corner when Rachel Harshaw slotted the ball home. It was swiftly followed by a second when Brianna Gregg cut out another re-start and drove into the circle to finish from the top of the circle to cement their 2-0 win.

Thanks to Lisnagarvey HC for hosting the match and to South Antrim for a hard fought game.

Coach Colin Henning also expressed his thanks to Kathryn Baird and Jonny Gregg for all their help and support with the team.

The next game is on 16th October against Dromore, to be played at Friends School, Lisburn.
