Pending the installation of a new Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at the club in November, the committee arranged a training course on the 24th October for members to learn how to deal with a cardiac arrest situation.
The excellent two hour course was provided by Anna Pim from "at the Heart of the Game".
During the training the participants learned key facts on the heart, including the cause of a cardiac arrest and the difference between a cardiac arrest and a heart attack.
It was a surprise to learn that in the UK and Ireland there are over 33,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year. With a survival rate of less than 1 in 10 people.
An effective response in the first 10 minutes of a cardiac arrest is crucial to enabling survival.
Everyone on the course learned how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to operate an AED to give a patient the best chance of recovery, with hands on experience using state of the art dummies.
Hopefully there will not be a need to use the new defibrillator at the club, however it's reassuring to know that its there and that we have members who know how to use it!
"at the Heart of the Game" was founded by Anna during lockdown when she reflected on a friend who survived a cardiac arrest. The next two years saw Anna make a huge impact throughout the hockey family in Northern Ireland. She came up with an idea, branded it, gathered a support network around her, sought funding, raised money, liaised with governing bodies and organisations.
Delivering awareness training, Anna empowered over 300 young people with the knowledge and confidence to perform CPR and use a defibrillator in the event of a cardiac arrest. Anna has combined her love for sport, business and leadership to create an educational programme for the sporting community throughout Ireland.
The company's aim is: "To protect athletes, coaches and the sporting community by fostering a culture of safety through comprehensive CPR and AED awareness training, enabling rapid and effective response to cardiac emergencies."
