Become a qualified Umpire!

25 August 2021

The club is fully committed to supporting and working with Ulster Hockey and the Ulster Hockey Umpires Association to help develop umpires at all levels.

Umpiring is a crucial area of the game that urgently needs additional numbers to be able to support the increasing volume of matches being played and to help develop the standards and overall quality of the game. Being an umpire is also a great way to rise up the ranks and get involved ultimately in the highest levels of international competition.

As a Senior men's and women's club, we are also obliged to provide qualified umpires into the overall Ulster Hockey umpires pool. Failure to meet this obligation will result in fines and potential points deductions in our associated 1st XI leagues during the season.

To help alleviate the problem, UH and the UHUA have created two exciting new development opportunities outlined below, for young and older male and female hockey enthusiasts...

  • Young Umpires Programme, targeted at young people aged 15 -21
  • Umpiring Seminars for all potential Senior League umpires

The club will actively support any member interested in getting involved and will fund any associated fees and expenses.

If you're interested in either of these schemes, just email your details to the Club Secretary using the link below....

Young Umpires Programme

The Young Umpires training course is designed to be an introduction to hockey umpiring for young people aged 15 to 21. This course will focus on how to umpire youth hockey looking specifically at U11, U13 and U15 youth hockey.

The Young Umpires course is the first course in the hockey umpiring pathway and is a great way to get a taste of umpiring.

The course is 2 hours 30 mins in duration and focuses on delivering basic hockey umpiring to U11, U13 and U15 youth hockey. The course will be broken into two parts. There will be time spent inside looking over the theory part of being an umpire (rules, regulations, hand signals etc.) and outside looking at the practical side of umpiring (umpiring young kids).

Ulster Hockey want kids to get as much out of this umpiring course as possible and to ultimately enjoy overseeing youth hockey matches in the coming season.

You must be between 15 - 21 years of age to take part in this training course.  All participants will receive a Young Umpires T- Shirt and whistle.

Date: 17th September 2021 6:00pm to 8:30 pm

Venue: Ferris Park Playing Fields, Dromore

If you are interested in taking part in this course or a future one, please advise the Club Secretary by Friday 3rd September 2021

Umpiring Seminars

At the 2021 Ulster Hockey AGM the current perilous situation in regard to the number of Umpires was discussed. The outcome of the discussion was that to improve the numbers of Umpires available would require a joint effort from both the clubs and the Umpires Association.

To support this the Umpires Association is proposing to conduct a series of Zonal workshops to encourage the candidate Umpires to come forward and explain the new process to becoming a panel umpire and the drive by both Ulster Hockey Umpires and Irish Hockey Umpires to provide mentoring and opportunities especially for young candidates.

The process has been extensively overhauled and now consists of online sessions and practical on pitch training and assessment.

Date: TBC, early season

Venue: The aim is for Newry to host our local Zonal session

If you are interested in taking part, please advise the Club Secretary by Friday 10th September 2021
