On Saturday 23rd October, Newry Olympic Ladies travelled to Bangor Grammar School to play Donaghadee Ladies, the match ball for the game was kindly sponsored by Katriona, women’s clothing & fashion boutique Banbridge.
Newry started off strong and put the pressure on from the first whistle with great passing from the mid-field through to the forwards.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before Donaghadee’s centre forward got into the Newry circle and scored from a shot at the top of the circle, putting the ball into the bottom right corner, just out of the Newry goalie's reach.
Donaghadee’s centre forward proved to be a thorn in Newry's side as she continued to pick the ball up and drive towards the Newry circle, but with centre back Rebecca Murdock's and sweeper Chrissie McCauley’s great tackling, they prevented her from having another shot on goal.
It wasn’t long though until Donaghadee ladies were awarded a penalty corner which was well covered by first runner Kathryn Baird who blocked the shot with her stick, preventing another goal.
Into the second quarter and Donaghadee scored an early second goal, but the Newry ladies kept the pressure on with some great play from right back Sara Adams, who played the ball down the line to right winger Stephanie Smart. Newry’s centre forward Laverne Inns made great runs into the circle to pick up the ball, but couldn’t manage to come away with any goals.
At half time, Newry were down a couple of goals, but from the re-start were determined to change the scoreline and within a couple of minutes a penalty corner was awarded.
The ball was injected out by Kathryn Baird to Chrissie McCauley, who switched it to Rachael Greer on the right, but no shot was on so the ball was switched back to Chrissie, who put the ball in the back of the net for Olympic's first goal the day.
Donaghadee won penalty corner after penalty corner but had no luck in scoring due to great defending from Newry. The pressure told in the end however and the home side eventually bagged three more goals.
Into the last quarter and despite the score line, Newry ladies held their heads high and continued to show great spirit, working together as a team with excellent passing and defending.
Their effort was rewarded when the ball was played from right-mid Rachael Greer into the circle to right forward Stacey Moffett, who put pressure on the Donaghadee goalie to ensure the ball crossed the line for Newry's second goal.
The home side continued to press strongly for the remainder of the game and scored another three goals to come away with an 8-2 win.
