On Saturday 8th January, Newry Olympic 2s started the New Year as they finished the last with a well deserved win away from home, having travelled to Lisburn to face a tough game against Lisnagarvey 5s.
Lisnagarvey started the match with their usual fluid passing, but were unable to break the Newry defence down. The visitors were soon getting joy however with their more direct approach and early chances fell to Moffett, Graham and McCafferty.
It was captain Simon McCafferty who opened the scoring from a well worked short corner. He played a one-two with Josh Porter before nutmegging the home keeper giving him no chance.
The Olympic team continued to press forward after taking the lead. They stayed in Garvey’s half for the second quarter, putting the home side under constant pressure with great passing and tackling through the midfield of Blakley, Moffett and McCullough. More scoring chances were created with Noah Lutton and Porter both having great opportunities, but they were unable to convert.
In the second half Newry huffed and puffed to try and force a second goal. 'Garvey were hitting on the counter attack, but Richard Henning in the Newry goal kept them at bay.
As the match wore on Newry began to dominate more and again created chances, however the ‘Garvey goal keeper was in fine form keeping out attempts from Corey Large, Gareth Moffett, Jonah Lutton and Steven Graham.
Although the lead was a slender one, the Olympic team used their experience to wind down the clock. They held out with some big tackles coming from Ivor Lutton, Jeremy Greer and John Lawson in defence, to deservedly take all three points back to Newry.
With only three games remaining, the 2s are sitting in second position in the league and will host league leaders Queens 2s next Saturday 15th January, for a top two clash starting at 1pm.
