On Friday 1st March, Newry Olympic Ladies 2s played Lisnagarvey 6s under the floodlights at Hillsborough, in the Junior 9 Cup quarter final.
Garvey fielded a very youthful side for the game and after starting the match with a passback, were soon on the attack, pushing their whole team high up the pitch.
Garvey were first to secure a couple of corners, but due to the quick actions of both Caralyn Ferris and Chrissie Macauley in defence, the home side failed to score. However, due to their speed and agility in open play, Garvey managed to slip the ball into the goal a few minutes before the end of the first quarter.
During the second quarter, Captain Laverne Inns won the first corner for Newry, but Garvey foiled any attempt on goal. Garvey kept the pressure on the Newry defence, pushing high and although unable to finish from further corners, eventually scored again in open play making it two nil.
At half time Newry changed formation to strengthen midfield. The visitors kept Garvey at bay, despite coming under heavy pressure in the Newry circle. The Olympic goalkeeper, Abby Moffett, was on her toes and blocked every attempt to score from some amazing shots on goal. Shortly before the end of the quarter Garvey pushed all ten outfield players into the Newry half and eventually they grabbed their third goal of the game.
In the final quarter, Newry kept their heads up and came out fighting and refrained from conceding any more goals.
Newry wish Lisnagarvey all the best as they progress in to the semi-finals of the cup.
