Mens 1s optimistic for Linden Cup Final despite injuries

Newry Olympic Mens 1s will face a strong Mossley side in the Linden Cup Final on Sunday 27th April @12pm at the NICS Playball Complex at Stormont in Belfast to bring their season to a close.

Hampered by the loss of Captain Josh Porter and midfielder Marcus Murdock, both out with recent collarbone breaks, the team is confident that they still have the firepower to go for the win, with in-form forward Keith McWilliams and penalty corner expert Davy England ready to make every chance count.

Although the newly crowned UH Intermediate League Champions are favourites with four wins over Olympic during the season, the most recent game between the two at the Belfast Road ground at the end of March, ended with a late 3-1 win for the visitors. Newry showed they are more than capable of holding their own against Mossley, taking the lead in the match in the first half and just running out of steam in the final quarter.

Newry have an experienced defensive unit with Colin Henning, Davy England, Andrew Baird and Gareth Moffett able to quickly switch the ball around the pitch to link the midfield and forward line.

Jeremy Greer, Ryan Simms, Corey Large and young James Macauley will also not stop running in the midfield to support both the attack and defence.

Either goalkeeping options of Richard Henning or Richard McGivern will be a strong last line of defence to keep Mossley out.

Other outfield players to bring on, are Kris Fletcher, wing dynamo Scott Blakely, centre forward Simon McCafferty and utility forward Richard McGivern. All will give great opportunities to rest tired legs during the match.

With twelve different scorers for the squad during the season, goals can come from anywhere!

No doubt a big turnout will be at Stormont on Sunday to cheer on Newry, hoping the team can take home the silverware for more celebrations at the club presentation dinner in May.
