With Newry’s pitch currently under maintenance, the seconds hosted Cookstown at Banbridge High School on Saturday. Newry were looking to make up for the recent defeat in the reverse fixture a few weeks prior and they did this with style.
From the start Newry dominated proceedings creating chance after chance, and it wasn’t long before they took the lead when captain Simon McCafferty deflected home a David Hogg cross. Just three minutes later it was two with David Hogg rocketing home from a short corner. It was constant pressure from the home side and although space was of a premium against a deep Cookstown defence, Jonah Lutton expertly found room in a crowded circle, to slot home another cross from Hogg. One goal and two assists in the first half for the Newry striker and another Lutton to add to the goal scorers for Newry down through the years.
The second half continued in the same vein as Newry put away a fourth with David Hogg again firing in from a short corner. Scot Blakley was lively on the ball throughout the game and he got his reward when his original attempt was blocked on the line by a Cookstown foot. Blakley stepped up and slotted home the resulting penalty flick to make it five. Simon Moffett was on hand to get Newry’s sixth to complete the scoring in a comprehensive win for the Belfast Road men.
