Ladies 2s finish season with another great performance!

What a game to finish the season!

South Antrim 6s won the toss against the Olympic Ladies 2s and were straight on the attack. Newry fought back with Caragh McGaffin driving up the right, playing the ball through to Sarah McNeilly who won the first corner for Newry. Captain Laverne Inns made a straight strike but due to the strong South Antrim defence and alert keeper, the shot was saved and cleared.

South Antrim were straight back on the attack and won their first corner, but the Newry goalkeeper Abbey Moffett saved the attempt on goal, rebounding the ball to right back Jodie Freeman who cleared the home side's lines.

The second quarter saw some beautiful play from Newry sweeper Chrissie McAuley, shooting the ball right up to left wing Arya Freeman who put the South Antrim goalie under pressure and kept the defence on their toes. Half-time ended in a goalless draw.

The third quarter saw the weather dramatically change for the worse, but it didn't dampen Newry's spirit with beautiful passing from Zara Moffett through to midfield and with some quick action, crashed the ball into the visitors' circle to win several corners. The South Antrim defence came under a lot of pressure and Captain Inns had the ball in the net, but unfortunately it was just after the whistle was blown so she missed out putting the home side into the lead.

During the final quarter Newry switched formation to two players upfront and four in midfield and continued to win numerous corners, but on the final whistle there was no score and the teams shared the points.

After the game, Captain Laverne thanked Brian Lockhart for all his help and support as coach for the 2023/24 season and also was very grateful to Tara McShane and Norman Toombs for umpiring.

Laverne added "It has been a pleasure and privilege to be part of Newry Olympic Ladies 2s this season and I would like to wish everyone a well earned break and hopefully will see everyone back at training again in August for 2024/25!"
