Newry Olympic Ladies 1s had a well-deserved win away to Antrim Ladies on Saturday 2nd November.
The girls started off strongly, with midfielder Hilde Rabe intercepting the ball and passing between Shruti Suresh and Rachel Harshaw, who worked hard to move the ball up the pitch into the Antrim half. Newry forwards Sarah Liggett, Fran Santoro-Ferrer, and Yasmin Muldrew worked together to create opportunities in the Antrim circle, putting pressure on their defence.
The girls’ hard work paid off and they managed to win a short corner. Vice-captain Steph Smart injected the ball to Hilde Rabe who passed to Fran Santoro-Ferrer who hit the ball straight into the back of the net, securing the first goal for Newry.
During another short corner, the Newry girls managed to secure the second and final goal of the game thanks to Steph Smart, who acted fast under pressure to work the ball around the Antrim defence to Fran Santoro-Ferrer who once again slipped the ball past the keeper.
Throughout the first three quarters, Newry dominated the play, working together to hold possession and put pressure on the Antrim ladies. However, in the final quarter Antrim upped the intensity, holding a lot of the possession and winning a few short corners.
Antrim were unable to score however, thanks to Newry goalkeeper, Katie McCullough, who made some excellent saves. Defenders Abbey Haire, Steph Smart, Diane McMinn-Johnson, and Rebecca Murdock put up a strong fight in the circle to clear the ball out of the Newry half and ensure the two-goal lead.
The Olympic girls showed great determination throughout the game, constantly working together to secure their third win of the season!
