Newry hosted Portrush looking to get their first league win of the season after a draw the previous weekend against Raphoe.
It didn’t take long as the home side came flying out of the traps to score four in the first quarter.
James Macauley reacted first to a loose ball in the opposition circle to slot home from four yards out. Keith McWilliams opened his account for the season and his first of four on the day, after creating himself some space in the Portrush "D" and firing past the visitors' keeper. Next it was Ryan Simms with a well taken drag flick to put the home side three up in 10 minutes. McWilliams again found some space in the circle after a well worked Newry attack, to smash home a reverse shot from the top of the "D" to finish the first quarter on a high.
Newry continued to keep the pressure on Portrush for the second and third quarters, but the away side defended well, with their keeper making some good saves, as well as some missed opportunities by the Olympic players.
Not long into the fourth period, the home side's relentless pressure finally told when McWilliams got two in quick succession from well worked short corners. McWilliams then turned provider for the final goal of the game when his ball found Scott Blakley who slotted home.
