On Saturday 29th January, Newry Olympic ladies played Ballynahinch ladies in a Senior 3 away fixture. From the whistle, Newry started strong and Hinch knew they were in for a tough game.
Unfortunately, with only minutes into the game, the home side scored, putting Newry one nil down. This didn’t stop Newry and up until the end of the first quarter, they had the majority of possession and created multiple opportunities but were unable to equalise.
In the second quarter, Newry still kept possession and with some lovely link up play between centre mid Rachael Greer and right mid Kathryn Baird, the Olympic girls were able to drive forward with the ball and win their first penalty corner of the match. The ball was switched to Chrissie McAuley at the top of the circle, but the ball was fantastically saved on the line by a home defender on the left post.
Ballynahinch knew they had a tough second half ahead of them and Newry were determined to try and equalise. Hinch had a few early opportunities, but with great defending by Rebecca Murdock and Jodie Freeman they still only remained one up. Newry nearly had their equaliser when left mid Stephanie Smart played a great pass to left winger Laverne Inns who was one on one with the Hinch’s keeper, but the ball was deflected off the keeper’s pads.
For the remainder of the match Ballynahinch were really putting the pressure on, but the Newry ladies kept their composure and continued to fight until the final whistle. A fantastic performance by the Newry ladies who were very unfortunate to lose by one goal.
Newry ladies take on Portadown Ladies 2nds on Friday 4th February in the first round of the Intermediate Plate.
