Last Friday night, Newry Olympic ladies 1s travelled to Cookstown and gave another fantastic performance, even though the score ended 3-0 to Cookstown.
Cookstown dominated the Newry half for most of the first quarter, but with strong defending from Rebecca Murdock, Chrissie McAuley and Sarah McNeilly, the score remained nil nil at the break.
In the second quarter, Newry were still under pressure from the home side, but the Olympic girls kept their composure and with great passing and defending were able to keep the ball away from the Newry circle. Before the end of the second quarter, Cookstown drove the ball into the circle and managed to win a penalty corner, but it was brilliantly saved by keeper Katie McCullough.
Newry were delighted to remain nil nil at half time and knew they had to keep working hard to maintain the score line.
In the third quarter Cookstown had plenty of chances to secure a goal, but the Newry ladies made it difficult for them by clearing the ball up the pitch to the Newry forwards.
With minutes to go to the end of the quarter, the ball was passed from Newry sweeper Chrissie McAuley onto mid-fielder Elle Corkey’s stick, who drove forward with the ball, passed three Cookstown players and sprinted into their circle, making a lovely pass across to Laverne Inns who was in front of the goalie, but the resulting shot was unfortunately deflected off the keeper and cleared by the home defence.
Within the last minute, Cookstown broke forward and their right winger put the ball into the right-hand corner of the net, ending the third quarter with a one goal lead to the home team.
Olympic ladies kept their heads high going into the fourth quarter and were determined to get an equaliser. It wasn’t long however before Cookstown won a penalty corner putting them another goal ahead. It wasn’t to be Newry's night, as Cookstown managed to get yet another goal finishing the game with a 3-0 win.
Another proud team performance by the Newry Olympic ladies, managing to keep the score line nil-nil until the third quarter. Super play by Elle Corkey, who had so much energy from start to finish and a fantastic game yet again by keeper Katie McCullough.
Newry ladies travel to Derg Valley on Saturday 20th November for their next league match.
