Newry Men’s 2nds played out a well executed 3-1 victory over Instonian’s at home on Saturday in the second game of their 2021/22 campaign. Newry were dealt a blow when midfielder Gareth Moffett was injured in the warm up and was replaced in midfield by the returning Andy Marks.
Newry started the match well with high intensity, which led to the first goal with Scott Blakley dispatching a first time volley into the side netting, a definite contender for goal of the season!
It was a lively first half and Newry almost doubled the lead. Striker David Hogg, turned and set McCafferty through on goal with a neat threaded pass. McCafferty shot across goal towards the corner, but the visiting keeper was equal to it with a good low save.
Following on from last week, the Newry defence of Barlow, Graham, Lutton and Ross stood firm, with Richard Henning in the Newry net rarely called upon.
Newry did manage to double their lead when Hogg cleverly slipped to McCafferty on the left hand side of the 'D', who fired into the roof of the net past the stranded keeper.
Inst did manage to get themselves back into the game when their centre forward slotted home from the top of the circle giving Henning no chance.
This spurred Newry on and they wrapped up all 3 points with a fine flowing team move involving Graham, Blakley and Simon Moffett, with the later playing the ball through to McCafferty, who turned and fired into the bottom corner to complete a hard fought victory.
