Newry’s tough start to the new season continued on Friday night as they were beaten 3-0 away to Instonians in Belfast.
This was always going to be a stern test for the away side as Instonians were coming off a 6-0 win vs South Antrim.
Newry defended well for long periods and tried to hit on the counter attack, which nearly paid off as Keith McWilliams was extremely unlucky not to get on the score sheet when his diving attempt scraped the outside of the post. However Inst went one up through a short corner in the second quarter, and just before the half they made it two, again from another short corner.
Newry came out better in the second half and Jeremy Greer had a goal wrongly disallowed, which would have seen the away side really put pressure on.
It wasn’t to be and as Newry continued to press forward in search of a goal, they were starting to leave gaps at the back. Inst eventually got their third from another short corner, before sealing a comprehensive win with a well worked counter and a tap in at the back post.
Newry are away again this coming Saturday to South Antrim and will need to get back to winning ways.
