Newry Olympic 1s hosted Queens on Saturday in their opening match of the Kirk Cup, hot on the heels of their recent 1-0 loss to Queens last week in the league.
As expected, Queens started off strongly with a lot of possession. Newry were restricted to a few counter attacks. Both sides were unable to come up with any chances of note in the first half, with the Newry defence holding firm.
Newry came more into the game as the match wore on and started strongly in the second half.
They made the pressure count with John Taylor getting his first score of the day from a well worked short corner. However the lead was short lived, as Newry went down to ten men and Queens netted from their own short corner move to level the scores. Making their numerical advantage count, the students then heaped further pain on the home side as they went in front just on the whistle for the end of the third quarter.
Olympic knew they had work to do and flew out of the traps in the fourth quarter, pressing further up the pitch and causing a lot of problems for Queens. Colin Holmes stepped up mid-way through the quarter, to fire home a short corner of his own to level the scores again.
Newry still had the bit between their teeth and with just three minutes remaining they took the lead once again, with Taylor getting his second of the day to seal the win for Newry.
