Newry Olympic ladies played Larne Ladies at home on Saturday 27th November. With Larne sitting third on the league table, the Olympic girls knew they were in for a tough match.
From the first whistle Larne pressed forward with quick passing among their mid-field and forwards, making the home defence work hard. It wasn’t long before Larne won a penalty corner from which they secured their first goal of the match.
Into the second quarter, the Newry ladies kept their heads high and even though Larne were still driving forward with the ball, the defending was really strong from the Newry defence. With great hit outs from sweeper Chrissie McAuley through to the mid-field and forwards, Newry created a couple of chances, but were unable to find an equaliser. Larne won another penalty corner but with a fantastic reverse stop by McAuley on the right post, the ball was well cleared.
Not long into the third quarter, Rachael Greer won a penalty corner for Newry which resulted in a straight shot on goal by Chrissie McAuley, but the ball deflected off a Larne defender's stick and went wide. Newry worked hard to drive forward with the ball, but they were constantly pressured by Larne players. Unfortunately, Larne scored again from a penalty corner as the ball was deflected off keeper Katie McCullough’s pads into the back of the net. They then added two more before the end of the quarter.
With only minutes into the final quarter, Larne broke with the ball and managed to secure their final goal of the match. Newry continued to play really good hockey and worked well to clear the ball from the circle preventing any more goals.
Even though Newry ladies were beaten 0-5, they played some great hockey and gave Larne a good game.
The next match is against Banbridge Ladies 2XI in the Intermediate Cup on Saturday 4th December.
