On Friday 11th February Newry Olympic ladies played Cookstown at home and gave one of their best performances of the season, losing narrowly by 2 goals to 1.
Newry started strong and within 30 seconds scored the first goal of the match as the ball was passed into the circle onto Stacey Moffett’s stick who put Newry one nil up. Newry continued to hold possession but were unable to score any more in the first quarter.
Not long into the second quarter, Cookstown equalized but Newry kept the heads and with great passing and defending were able to keep it one all until half time.
Cookstown started to put the pressure on the home team in the third quarter, but the Olympic girls fought back and managed to win a couple of penalty corners but were unable to convert.
Going into the final quarter, the score remaining one each, Newry were still putting pressure on the Cookstown side, creating opportunity after opportunity but with five minutes to go, Cookstown broke through the Newry defence and scored their second goal.
Time was running out for the Newry ladies who fought to the final whistle and were unfortunate to come away with a 2-1 loss.
The score line didn’t reflect what was a well-played game by the Newry ladies who dominated the majority of the match.
