On Saturday 1 March 2025, Newry Olympic Ladies 2s played Saintfield Ladies 5s at home at Markethill High School.
Unfortunately Saintfield turned up with only ten players and once Newry had scored four, the home team took the opportunity to roll on and roll off players, as well as try different positions.
The first goal came from a side line ball with Jessica McCullough weaving her way through the Saintfield players and she walloped the ball through the keeper pads. Sarah Knight took the opportunity to ensure the ball went over the goal line to put Newry into the lead one nil. Newry kept the pressure on with a lovey hit into the circle from Jodie Freeman and captain Laverne Inns picked it up, turned and slipped it past the keeper to make the score two nil. Before the end of the first quarter, Rebekah McFarland had driven her way forward with some fast one twos with Ali Benson and then she smashed the ball into the back of the Saintfield net for three.
In the second quarter, Katie McFarland found herself in mid position for a change and slipped the ball to Sarah Knight who once more hit the ball past the Saintfield keeper to make it four nil.
Saintfield had some strong players in midfield and never gave up hope and were awarded numerous corners, but due to the amazing defensive blocks by Emma McCullough and Chrissie McAuley, the visitors remained scoreless. Even during open play, Newry keeper, Abby Moffett cleared, slid, kicked away every attempt on goal.
Player of the match was Jessica McCullough for her great drive, defensive and attacking skills throughout the match.
