Newry Olympic Ladies 2nds played their penultimate match of the season, away to CI Ladies 5s on Saturday 22 March at the CIYMS complex on the Belmont Road, Belfast.
CI won the pass back and Newry chose sides. It was a very equal game throughout with chances on both sides, but CI were the first to score in the second quarter. Olympic won their first few corners of the half, but the CI runners were out fast and intercepted any first shots on goal. However, a well worked move saw a lovely slip to Jodie Freeman who cracked the ball home for Newry's equaliser.
It was during the third quarter that Newry used their full 16 strong squad and were able to roll on and roll off fresh legs. The Newry forwards were being tightly marked by the CI defence, leaving midfielder Caragh McGaffin free to play some lovely dodges and slap the ball into the CI net putting the visitors into the lead.
When the full time whistle sounded, both teams had given their all, but it was Newry who secured the important three points on the leader board.
Player of the match went to Diane McMinn-Johnston who played a blinder in centre-mid with her distribution, her tackling and her tenacity throughout the whole match.
Thanks to Katriona from Banbridge for sponsoring the match ball for the game.
The final match of the season for the 2s will be on Friday 28th March against CI Ladies 6s away once again in Belfast.
