On Saturday 17th August, Newry Olympic Hockey Club's Golf Society made the trip to the stunning Jack Nicklaus designed Killeen Castle course in Co Meath for Jeff McNeill’s Captain's Day.
Over the years Killeen Castle has held many prestigious events including the Solheim Cup and the Ladies Irish Open, but nothing as prestigious as the Newry Olympic Hockey Club's Captain's Day!
With a brilliant turn out of twenty-six golfers and fine weather for the occasion, everyone was in for a treat.
Stepping up to the occasion to claim the Captain's Day prize, was the big hitting Richard McGivern. Richard had a very steady front nine, hitting 19 points which put him in a great position. With a four over back nine with a birdie on a dangerous 17th Hole, this led to a 24 point back nine, putting Richard five points clear of everyone else. This was a superb score on a demanding and challenging course.
In 2nd Place was Andrew Marks. Andy had a superb front nine with 21 points, but couldn’t repeat this form in the back nine. With a birdie on the 10th Hole, Andy was in a commanding position, but no score on the 15th Hole proved costly, only returning 17 points on the way home.
In 3rd Place came Ryan McIlroy, again another brilliant front nine performance with 20 points, but with only 16 points on the way home this wasn’t enough to catch the leaders.
The Closest to the Pin, which was generously sponsored by Colin Brown, was won by guest Mick McMullan on the 16th Hole.
Longest Drive was won by the Captain's Day winner Richard McGivern.
The Golf Society Committee would really like to thank Killeen Castle for letting us play at their wonderful facilities. The golf course, the food, the staff were all brilliant and this contributed to one of the best days the society has had to date, playing golf on one of the county’s finest courses.
Thanks to everyone who attended once again, another great turnout which keeps giving great encouragement to the Committee.
On behalf of the Society and Committee we would like to specially thank Billy Nummy, who drove the Society down and back home on the day, which was very much appreciated by everyone.
After three rounds, Trevor Anderson has a two point lead in the Golfer of the Year standings, but with the top three separated by just three points, there's still a long way to go!
