Newry Olympic 2s met Instonians 3s on Tuesday evening 19th April in the Junior 3 league cup semi final at Shaw's Bridge, Belfast.
Newry started the brighter and kept possession for lengthy spells. Some great forward work by Alex Irwin, Simon Moffett and Simon McCafferty ended up with creating several chances in the first quarter but the Olympic team were unable to capitalise on their superiority.
Newry flew out of the traps in the second quarter and found themselves in the lead when Jeremy Greer found McCafferty who’s goal bound effort was finished by Alex Irwin. The reds’ lead was doubled soon after from a penalty corner when Greer found himself one on one with the keeper and slipped the ball under him.
Inst came out firing in the second half, with Newry having to withstand periods of pressure however the defence of Moffett, Barlow, Lutton and Baird stood strong. A good turnover ball from Inst followed by a quick counter attack, allowed them to pull a goal back and keep the contest going.
It was McCafferty who grabbed Newry’s third when marauding right back Gareth Moffett found him at the top of the circle and the forward made no mistake.
Inst continued to pile on the pressure and did manage to score a late consolation with the last touch of the game, however it was too little too late and the boys from the Belfast Road booked their place in the cup final on the 7th of May.
