On Friday 4th February Newry Olympic ladies played Portadown 2nds in the first round of the Intermediate Plate.
Portadown started strong and dominated the Newry half putting pressure on the defence. It wasn’t long before Portadown hit the ball into the Newry circle where their left winger deflected the ball into the net.
Newry fought hard to drive forward with the ball but were constantly intercepted. It wasn’t long before the home side won a penalty corner, putting them 2 nil up with only ten minutes into the game.
Newry continued to battle and worked hard to defend the ball from their circle, but not long before the end of the first quarter Portadown scored their third goal by another deflection.
In the second quarter Olympic still remained under pressure, but with great defending and composure managed to only concede one further goal.
Newry started to grow into the game in the second half and created some lovely links between the midfield and forwards, but they were unfortunate not to put a goal on the scoreboard.
With ten minutes to go to final whistle, Portadown scored their final goal ending the game 5-0.
Newry faced strong opposition on the night in Portadown
and the team played really well to cope with the
constant pressure they were under
throughout the game. The squad
continues to develop and is becoming stronger with each game.
