Saturday 12th October did not start well for Newry Olympic Ladies 2nd team.
On their journey to Carrickfergus to play Castle Ladies, they were caught in massive traffic congestion on the M5 following a five car collision. The PSNI diverted most of the team back to the M2, through Glengormley and Mallusk and as a result a lot of the team arrived after the pass back scheduled at 2.30 p.m. Unfortunately Newry also did not have their full 16 squad, so were unable to roll on and off like the previous two weeks.
Things went from bad to worse when the Olympic lost the toss and Castle chose the side with the sun behind them.
The first quarter saw the Newry defence put under a lot of pressure and they quickly went two nil behind.
A disheartening third Castle shot went into the Newry goal in the second quarter, but the visitors failed to give up and kept battling on.
The final two quarters saw both teams play under hailstones, fierce wind and rain. The visitors were awarded a couple of corners but with the strong winds changing the direction of the ball on injection, the Ladies failed to score.
Newry wished the Castle 4ths a Merry Christmas and look forward to the return match in 2025.
